Nearly any island you go to in the Caribbean will be beautiful, but Saint Lucia is truly one of the most amazing destinations on the planet. Whether it’s for a honeymoon, group trip or adventure around some of the island’s lush green space, there are plenty of reasons you should visit in 2017 and beyond!
Like most islands, the weather in Saint Lucia is idyllic – mainly warm and sunny with periods of rainy seasons throughout the year. For the most part, it’s perfect beach weather for going anywhere on the island, from the beaches to its vast rain forests with needing much more than a shorts and t-shirt.
Culture & History
St. Lucia’s history is an amazing mix of cultures and heritages that blend African, indigenous and European – mainly French and British – culture together to create something brand new. Saint Lucians speak English as well as a French-based creole, and many of the parish, town, and city names are in French – such as Gros Islet and Soufriere.
These huge mountains are one of the most iconic and well-known places on the island, with Gros Piton reaching a skyscraper heights at 771 m high and Petit Piton sitting at 743 m high. Both are volcanic plugs – dormant of course – and have tons of minerals on and around it due to this. It’s been the site of many famous movie moments, including films like Superman 2 and Pirates Of The Caribbean.
St. Lucia is home to some of the region’s most beautiful beaches. With endless white sand and clear blue waters, you can wander around to any one of the island’s many beaches. These beautiful beaches are the perfect places to unwind, relax, snorkel, swim and so much more. Try locations like Anse du Cap Beach, Jalousie Beach, Reduit Beach, Malabar Beach, and Choc Beach to start out.
The food in Saint Lucia is savoury and spicy just like much of the Caribbean, with its French culinary influences obvious in many of the dishes. Try fried bakes alongside green fig and salt fish, the country’s national dish, and traditional breakfast meal. There’s also plenty of inspiration from nearby Caribbean islands, with Trinidadian Roti and Jamaican jerk chicken widely available along with more local cuisine.
Nestled deep in Soufriere is the infamous Sulphur Springs, known as the only “drive in volcano” in the world. The mineral deposits are said to have healing and rejuvenating properties, which is why tourists and locals alike take advantage of the warm 45°C mud bath located inside the volcano’s mouth. It’s a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
Diamond Botanical Gardens
For those interested in getting to know the ins and outs of Saint Lucia’s beautiful forestry, this botanical garden in Soufriere is home to many of the island’s local flora, including flowers and trees like Heliconias, Balisier, Hibiscus as well as Vanilla and cocoa bean trees. It once served as a collection of hot springs and mineral baths for the French troops of King Louis XVI in the 18th century, but it’s since been turned into a highly educational guided tour that brings you up close and personal with some pretty impressive plant life.
