It’s no secret that destinations all over the Caribbean are breathtakingly beautiful and the Bahamas are absolutely no different. A collection of over 700 islands, islets, and cays make up this amazing destination, and there are plenty of reasons why this should be on your 2017 bucket list and beyond. Here are just a few great reasons why you should head to the Bahamas this year.

The Beaches

The Bahamas are known all over the world for some of the most beautiful sandy beaches anyone could imagine. It’s important to remember just how many options you have in terms of beaches to see, with so many different islands and costs throughout the Bahamas. In the Exumas, head to beaches like Hamburger Beach, Coco Plum Beach, Three Sisters Beach while in Nassau, your best bet is Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island, Junkanoo Beach Cable Beach. Remember there are other great options within the Bahamas on island groupings like Andros, The Berry Islands and The Abacos.

Beach Pigs!

If you love the beaches, the island of Exuma has an interesting treat for you. On one uninhabited island, you’ll find the famous Pig Beach – where pigs who live on the island come for a cooling dip in the Bahamian sun. With a recent decline in their population, it’s important to make sure you don’t feed or get too close to the pigs so they can enjoy their beach time just as much as you!

The Food

One of the most amazing things about the Bahamas is the food, and you’ll get to indulge in all kinds of local dishes while you’re here. Because seafood is such an important part of the local economy, it makes perfect sense for much of the cuisine to be based on dishes that include fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, conch and so much more. There’s also plenty of fruits, rice-based dishes, potatoes and plenty of pork! As with much of the Caribbean, Bahamian food is well-seasoned, savory and often spicy – and a mix of African, European, Asian and Indigenous cultural influences to create the amazing dishes. Try local favourites like conch soup – especially since conch is the national dish of the islands. There are also plenty of chicken and goat dishes served with sides like rice & peas, baked macaroni & cheese, cassava bread and even American-influenced grits and potato salad.

The Arts & Culture

Another great reason to head to the Bahamas is the experience the rich culture there throughout the year. From live music to the array of folklore and so much more, there’s a lot to take in if lounging on the beach for the entire trip isn’t your speed. Head to art markets like the Straw Market in Nassau to buy traditional crafts like straw work, canvas art and pieces made from stone and coral. Heading to the island shortly after Christmas means you’re likely to come across Junkanoo, a carnival celebration that runs from December 26th to Jan 1st. You’ll see beautiful costumes, hear plenty of music from all over the Caribbean and be able to eat even more delicious Bahamian meals while you party.

No matter why you end up going to the Bahamas, it’s important to have a great luggage system along for the trip like our Rise Gear bags – expertly designed for the modern traveller. Happy Travels!
